“What are those purple shoes?” That’s what everyone asks me when I pull out the new 5.10 Quantums, and I tell them- “They're sick!” I'm not a downturned shoe fan- most hurt my feet due to the severity of the downturn and the lack of stretch in the shoe. The Quantum solves both. A slight downturn and a perfectly stretchy Cowdura upper provide great fit, and the low volume heel cup seals the deal. The Mystique rubber ensures that the great edging capabilities stick around after countless pitches on the rock.
Right out of the box, these shoes fit perfectly: super-snug, but not painful. The lack of dead air in the heel was a welcome change from most shoes for me. Even the laces, which I normally hate, were awesome. The ridged laces stay put when you pull them tight so you don’t have to battle to keep it snug at every pull. They also climb amazing straight out of the box and stick to just about whatever you put your foot on. They're at home on anything steep, be it bouldering or a long route. These have become my go to project shoes for anything overhanging.
Pros: Fantastic fit for a downturned shoe. Low volume heel makes me happy. They're purple. Mystique Rubber = burly. Ridged laces make fit a breeze.
Cons: Not a slab shoe. Somewhat stiff. They take a minute or two to put them on. Probably don’t want to climb cracks with them. Five Ten says they're pink.
Overall Impression: If you're looking for a shoe that can play the tech game on steep rock, this is your shoe and because it's comfortable for a performance shoe, don't be afraid to bust these out on super-long pitches.
