Blog #3

About three weeks ago, my first trip to South-East Asia was born, and along  with it came some serious adventures. Here is a little play by play action:

- Left Las Vegas by car to LAX airport with my girlfriend Jodi and long time buddy, Joe Brooks.
- Plane delayed 6 hours in LA due to incoming Typhoon in Tapei, Taiwan (our layover destination along the way to Vietnam). Slept on floor, not so good!
- Obviously we the connecting flight, and forced to spend the night in Taiwan.
- Landed in Hanoi where my buddy Slo picked Joe and I up and we made the 5 hour Bus-Bus-Ferry-Bus transit to Cat Ba island on the south side of Ha Long Bay
- Slo and Erik are two climbers from America who basically visited Vietnam about 3 years ago, and never went back home. They started a climbing and adventure guiding service based out of Cat Ba Island called Slo Pony Adventures (www.slopony.com). They HOOKED everything up on our trip and Joe and I can't thank them enough!!!!
- 62 hours after we left Las Vegas, we were finally there in Cat Ba Town. Officially in the middle of ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE!!!! Super HAPPY!

- Started a 4-Day Deep Water Soloing trip with Erik and Joe. TONS of searching, water depth checking, and trying new projects. Tiring, yet successful.
- Jellyfish are everywhere! SHIT!
- Flying Fish of all sorts....amazing!

 - GIANT 6 foot Stingrays jump clear out of the water and make a huge splash, and I've never seen anything quite like it. It made the trip worthwhile with those rare sightings alone!
- Out of cooking gas, stop by local floating fishing village for refill
- Our boat breaks down!
- Rescued by another boat....upgrade baby!!!

- 1 day later, 2nd boat breaks down, rescued by a 3rd boat, and then back to Cat Ba Harbor
- Took 5-hour Bus-Ferry-Bus-Bus trip back to Hanoi to meet up with Brian Solano who just flew in from Denver

- My girlfriend Jodi finished up her time in Hanoi, and she came back to Cat Ba with me for the 2nd boat trip. She spent the first week in Hanoi doing charity medical work in several orphanages around Hanoi.Good for her!
- Prison Break! 140 inmates in Ha Long City break out of jail and are at-large in Ha Long Bay. Several fisherman were murdered in the Bay the day before our 2nd trip.....SHIT!

- We go to the local market and buy 4 machetes for self protection on the boat...Pirates are already notorious for boarding boats in the middle of the night and committing armed robberies, but now we got 140 extra potential pirates in the Bay! The excitement begins!
- 1st day of 5-day boat trip goes great! Killer sends, awesome video footage and photos on Brian's part, and fun had by all! Super psyched!

- 2nd day news of an incoming typhoon hits us and we are forced to seek shelter in a protected bay where the waves and winds wont sink our boat.
- 36 hours of GNARLY rain and wind while the storm passes. Life on the boat is full of Connect-4 tournaments and games of Cranium. Luckily we had plenty of beer!
- Waves die down enough to retreat back to Cat Ba to wait out another day of rain.
- Jodi leaves to go back to Las Vegas and Brian, Joe, Erik, and I head out on another boat to finish up the rest of the DWS trip.
- Perfect climbing! Jaw dropping good!
- Got drunk, and fell overboard....everyone laughed at me.

- We took the row boat over to a little floating fisherman house to see if they wanted to drink with us. We sat down in their 10 foot X 10 foot house and drank their homemade alcohol (sorta like Moonshine) and didn't speak a single word. I think they were happy we came over though, I couldn't really tell.
- Visited Monkey Island and saw the monkeys, and YES, they chase you and hate humans! Sketchy
- Played Tug-o-War on the beach with about 20 locals lost horribly!
- Back to Cat Ba for last day.
- Went Sport Climbing at "The Valley" and did a First Ascent of an AMAZING 5.13 called "Dream Weaver" that Erik bolted. Banana trees and Passion Fruit grown naturally at the base of the cliff which makes the jungle setting even more amazing.
- Back to Hanoi, then flew to the Philippines which is where I'm at now!
- I'll be here in Philippines for 2 weeks, then Indonesia, then Malaysia. Should be FUN!!!!!2nd day news of an incoming typhoon hits us and we are forced to seek shelter in a protected bay where the waves and winds wont sink our boat.
