The 2014 American Bouldering Series National Championship was held this past weekend in Colorado Springs, Colorado and first place wins were clinched by Daniel Woods and Germany’s Juliane Wurm. The competition was fierce and exciting, but the winners were a bit unsurprising as these two also took first at the previous weekend’s Hueco Rock Rodeo. Though Juliane Wurm took first, she’s ineligible for the national title since she’s from Germany, so that title for the women goes to Alex Puccio who finished in 2nd.
The finals, six men and seven women, were stacked with the biggest names in bouldering including Vasya Vorotnikov, Paul Robinson, Jon Cardwell, Alex Johnson, and Angie Payne. But this year also saw a changing of the guard with some fresh young faces joining the crew as well. New England’s Andy Lamb took a respectable third while Colorado up-and-comer Mike O’Rourke took fourth. Megan Mascarenas and Margo Hayes, both of Boulder’s Team ABC, took 3rd and 4th respectively, while 15-year-old Grace McKeehan of Texas took 5th, beating out seasoned veterans Alex Johnson and Angie Payne.
