Sasha DiGiulian Sends Southern Smoke (5.14c)

Within days of checking in at the Red River Gorge, Sasha DiGiulian has made quick work of one the Red’s most striking lines, Southern Smoke (5.14c). It only took Sasha 6 tries over 3 days to finish the 70+ move route.  DiGiulian arrived at the cliff late in the day, when the line was in the shade, and after warming up, she quickly cruised Southern Smoke and clipped the chains to claim the first female ascent.  On her scorecard Sasha commented, “6th try, 1st go of my 3rd day on it. Very nice, aesthetic climb! Psyched to be back on rock after a long break.”

Originally put up by Joe Kinder, Southern Smoke is a pumpy, enduro route located at the Bob Marley crag.  It is considered one of the Red River Gorge’s most outstanding lines.

Update!  Sasha's ascent of Southern Smoke was only the beginning.  She recently onsighted Omaha Beach (5.14a) and Last of the Bohicans (5.13d), both in the Red River Gorge's Motherload/Madness Cave.  Her onsight of Omaha Beach marks the first onsight of the grade by an American woman.  Omaha was  also onsighted by Katie Brown in 1999 but the grade at the time was 5.13d.  Broken holds have since upped the grade.  Sasha is still at the Red and it's doubtful that her sending spree is over.  Stay tuned.
