On Thursday, September 24th, Phil Schaal, the Connecticut climber now residing in Boulder who made headlines last month for his surprising "darkhorse" ascent of Jade (V15), had another great day in Rocky Mountain National Park.
Hiking up through snow flurries with his friend and sidekick Matt (also a recent Colorado transplant, but from California), Phil managed not only to snag the fifth ascent Ty Landman's extremely difficult Upper Chaos V13 Top Notch, but also to establish a low start to the also recently-established Mirkwood. Phil called his FA, I Comb My Hair Like God and believes it will come in around V11 or V12. An exclusive video, plus some thoughts from Phil are forthcoming in the next issue of DPM. Check out more from Phil @ phillipschaal.blogspot.com.
UPDATE: On Saturday, September 26th, just two days after his amazing park day, Phil and his wingman Jason went up to Mount Evans where Phil filled in the V14 blank in his grade pyramid by finishing off Ode to the Modern Man. Never content to quit climbing when he still has good skin, Phil then spent the rest of the day repeating other classics on the Dali wall. More info on all Phil's recent ascents and some insight into how Phil has managed his recent sending spree to come in the next issue of DPM.
