Misty Murphy: She Has an Answer for Everything

Love her or hate her Misty Murphy has your attention. Beautiful, soulful, and definitely outspoken she has garnered a lot of enemies and loads of respect. Careful if you respond to this article because you may in fact be the theme for her next song or blog topic!

It is a love hate thing, Misty’s relationship with the world of climbing and the many fans of her site. Her opinions are grand, her voice loud, and the piles of hate mail she receives continues to build up by the minute. Her talents span from climber, singer, all the way to model. Anyone who has visited her site www.mistymurphy.com and her blog is familiar with her outspoken antics along with her numerous observations from who would you rather F@ck, to outing those who are guilty of “douchebaggery”, and placing her many faults on the line for all to see. You may hate her one moment, love her the next, but with Misty Murphy what you see is not always what you get. DPM chased down our very own climbing diva and questioned her about everything from her latest song, her thoughts about sexism, and yes, she even answered some questions about climbing.

DPM: Are you a climber, singer, model?
Misty: Climber....yes. Singer....yes. Model??? No. But I do watch a lot of America's Next Top Model.

DPM: How would you describe Misty Murphy?
Misty: Not so starving artist

DPM: Where do you see your place?
Misty: In this beautiful desert island

DPM: How do you think others describe Misty Murphy?
Misty: Funny, rude, sensitive, psychic, obsessed

DPM: Your site utilizes the climbing world for praise and depending on which climber you are deprecating. Is there a message there? Do we take ourselves too seriously?
Misty: Climbing is pretty much retarded. We're not saving the world. It's totally narcissistic. So I find myself amused by how serious some people take the sport, the climbing "world", our "heroes" or whatever ethical drama people drum up. We are all just a bunch of selfish pricks.

DPM: You are a musician does climbing inspire your music or music inspire your climbing?
Misty: Only love and hate inspire my music. Only love and hate inspire my climbing.

DPM: Your latest song is entitled Savgi? Can you fill us in on where the song came from and its overall message?
Misty: The song is a Turkish poem that I found. The poem was like no other that I have ever read. It perfectly describes how desperate being in love can feel.
Translated it means:
I love you
Like dipping bread into salt and eating
I love you
Like something moves inside me
fluttering, happy, doubtful

DPM: How do you see sex playing a role in climbing and is our industry capitalizing on that?
Misty: It's just the way it is. Is Nicky Dyal in every issue because she is the hardest female climber right now? No, it's because she's hawt! Chris Sharma got incredibly lucky by being f'n hot AND the best climber in the world. SEX SEX SEX!!! I am currently working on my "Stone Nude Dudes" calendar for 2011. I am hoping that Chris will be a part of it........

DPM: Many times people say women are being capitalized on for their looks. Should it be something women should shun themselves from or if you got it use it?
Misty: It's annoying when it's blatant or ridiculous (16 year old crotch shot with old bald man belaying/panting....oh you know the ad!). Otherwise I see nothing wrong with it.

DPM:  When you are not recording which crag do you call home? Favorite line there?
Misty: Welcome Springs/The Cathedral. Favorite line? Heretic Wisdom 12a. Sooooo damn good!

DPM: I saw in your post someone was looting fixed draws and your response was very strong, what is your interpretation of that incident and was anything resolved?
Misty: I was psyched to call this guy out. If you found a guy breaking into your car, stealing your iPod would you not kick his ass? He stole gear from my friends who put time and energy into our local crags. Nothing was resolved. After bragging about stealing, he then denied it. Classic douchebaggery.

DPM: Describe your partnership with Odub? How did this partnership come to be? And are your songs entirely influenced by the industry or climbing?
Misty: We met on Match.com. Our music is influenced by our enormous egos. We fuck once in awhile, and then we make music (not necessarily in that order).

DPM: If you could say one thing about Misty Murphy that is true but most people don’t know or wouldn’t believe, what would it be?
Misty: I used to play the piano for the primary children in the Mormon Church
