Two of the biggest climbing events of the year are on the horizon at the New River Gorge, West Virginia and Smith Rock, Oregon.
New River Rendezvous
It's time to register to attend the New River Rendezvous near Fayetteville, West Virginia. The event will take place on May 17th-19th. The 10th annual 'Vous is a fundraiser to benefit the New River Alliance of Climbers. All proceeds will go toward the benefit of the New River Gorge region in the form of new fixed hardware, trails, revegetation projects, and anything else required to maintain or improve our cherished climbing areas. This event also marks the unofficial grand opening of the new American Alpine Club campground at the New River Gorge. Participants will have the option of camping at Burnwood (the traditional NPS site of the 'Vous) or at the new AAC property.

Attendees will enjoy one of the most fun three-day events in the nation. The days and evenings are packed with activities including: Outdoor comps in bouldering, sport, and trad, Clinics with pro climbers, dinner, music, the famous Desertapalooza sugar-fest, and tons of climbing with friends. This year's Rendezvous is a scaled-back event aimed at satisfying the goals of NRAC, sponsors, the National Park Service, and the participants. There are only 600 spots available so register now.

The Smith Rock Spring Thing at Smith Rock State Park, Oregon is coming up on May 11th. Smith Rock is quite likely the most beautifully maintained climbing area in the nation. For 21 years, a committed group of locals have organized and held the Spring Thing, a one-day park maintenance day that is crucial for maintaining the heavily-trafficked park's trails. Volunteers need only to show up at 8:00 AM on May 11th. The event is free and your day of fun, hard work concludes with a dinner, auction, and raffle starting around 5 PM. Parking passes, breakfast snacks, water, sunscreen, work gloves, tools, supplies, free camping at the bivy, and dinner are provided for all volunteers.
