J Star: definition
1. noun: nickname of pro climber Jonathan Siegrist
2. verb: to visit a new climbing area and quickly dispatch all the hardest routes
Examples:
“Man, J Star had a killer trip to Smith Rock. He J Starred that whole crag!”
“Dude, I just booked my flight to Kalymnos and I heard that shiz is softer than Charmin. I’m going to J Star that place!”
After Jonathan Siegrist’s latest trip to the famous tuff cliffs of Smith Rock, Oregon it seems only fitting to add a new term to the already complex world of climbing lingo. Not long after his highly publicized trip to the Red River Gorge where he swiftly repeated most of the hardest routes in a few tries, J Star is wrapping up another whirlwind trip. In just two weeks he has already compiled a ticklist that most Smith Rock lifers would be happy with. To name a few:
Kings of Rap 12d onsight
Taco Chips 13a onsight
Darkness at Noon 13a onsight
Aggro Monkey 13b second try
Oxygen 13b flash
Churning in the Ozone 13b onsight
Rude Boys 13c onsight
Burl Master 13c onsight
Disposable Heros 13c onsight
White Wedding 13d second try
Vicious Fish 13d third try
Bad man 14a fourth try
Scarface 14a second try
Mr Yuck 14a third try
Chemical Ali 14a second try
Time's Up 13b onsight
To Bolt or Not to be 14A fifth try
Churning Sky 13a
The climbing at Smith Rock is thin, skin intensive, technical, and stout for the grade. Siegrist’s trip is likely the most successful stint anyone has had at this crag thus far considering the short amount of time and quantity of hard routes completed. Jonathan’s travel partner Paige Claassen also had a killer trip with an onsight of the notoriously scary
Heinous Cling 12c, a flash of
Darkness at Noon 13a, completed
Churning in the Wake 13a, flashed Kings of Rap 12d, and redpointed White Wedding 13d. With their trip wrapping up and the heat setting in we look forward to hearing what else they were able to ‘J Star’ in their final days at Smith. More @ JSTARinORBIT.com
