The Impossible Traverse (V13) Sees a Second Ascent

Berkeley, California is not a location most people consider when they think of hard bouldering.  However, Mortar Rock has been a Bay Area destination since the early 90’s for California hard-men to prove their worth.   The crag saw a huge flourish of new lines and began to grow in popularity during the mid 90’s and, to this day, new eliminates continue to be put up on a regular basis.  Although Mortar Rock is surrounded by multi-million dollar homes it has not ceased to be a destination for residents of the Bay Area.

Seven years ago, Chris Sharma came through the area and put up the crags hardest line to date which he dubbed The Impossible Traverse (V13).  The line traverses through several hard moves, including weighting a sharp shallow pocket, then finishes on the Impossible Wall (V8). The moves are powerful and sustained throughout.

Last week, Brian Hedrick, a Touchstone Gym route setter and Berkeley resident, walked away with the route’s second ascent after putting in numerous sessions on the project.  Hedrick has been on a hot streak over the past several months sending the Mandala Sit (V13),Dominator (V12/13) and now The Impossible Traverse (V13).  Congratulations Brian!
