Event: Petzl Roc Trip 2013

posted by dpm on 05/09/2013

The Petzl Roc Trip is scheduled to take place June 22nd-24th at Gorges du Tarn near the French city of Millau. For the Roc Trip, this marks a return to their roots as the past two years have focused on further establishing remote climbing areas like Getu, China and Piedra Parada, Argentina in 2012.

In August of last year, Planetmountain reported that the Gorges du Tarn was largely re-opened after certain sectors had been closed due to access issues and poorly protected routes. After a non-fatal accident in 2010, closures were deemed necessary to protect climbers that continued to climb on the rusty 8mm bolts that were placed in the 80's and 90's. After a massive re-bolting effort, the cliffs were reopened and climbing was allowed to resume.

The goal of this Roc Trip is to revitalize climbing activity in the area and to instill a sense of respect for the environment of this sensitive and valuable crag. The event will take place beginning June 22nd and participants are required to register at the French site couleurcaillou.fr. Guest stars will include the entire French Petzl team as well as Chris Sharma, Dave Graham, Sasha Digiulian, and others.

There are plenty of nicknames for the Gorges du Tarn near the French city Millau: heaven on earth, the peaceful paradise, natural masterpiece…. Thanks to its wonderful cliffs, the place has become a world top spot of climbing. On June 22nd, 23rd and 24th, 500 climbers will visit for the international festival of climbing: the Roc Trip.

The famous event makes its come back in France. Petzl, the historical partner of the festival, is coming back in partnership with the French Climbing Club of Millau (CAF Causses et Cévènes ). It’s a return to basics for this event as the first editions have been held in Millau in 2002, 2004, 2006 and then in 2008 and 2009.

The principle of the Roc Trip is very simple: gathering passionate climbers around the world for three days of rock climbing, discovery, chilling, and sharing in a friendly atmosphere. With more than 500 routes from 5b to 9a, every climber will be pleased.

All participants will be gathered  in a typical French village: Saint Rome de Dolan, which overlooks the Gorges du Tarn.

Registration is necessary to take advantage of accommodation, restoration and set up.

On the economic and touristic plan, the Roc Trip has a goal of revitalizing the climbing spot as visitation has decreased during the past period of maintenance and re-equipment.

The project follows the previous actions that have been set up: approach of joint management of the site, re-equipment of more than 200 routes in 2012, and publication of the new topo of the Gorges du Tarn. It aims to be a tool of promotion for the site, but also a valuation of the committed actions and to raise climber's awareness toward the respect of the place and the environment.

More widely, the Roc Trip is a barometer and a clock of the climbing world. It takes the temperature and sets things straight! The sustainable development and sensitization of the participants to the environmental problems will be priorities of the event.

By registering, every climber commits to respect the environmental aspect of the site and follow the ecological ethic of the event.
