Daniel Woods has claimed the first ascent of the Ice Knife from the low start. Daniel’s wife, Courtney Sanders reported on Facebook: “So so so so excited for Daniel! Today he sent his hardest boulder to date! Ice knife sit start. So admirable how many days you can drive 2 hrs and sit under the same boulder and fall on almost every move. You have a true passion and dedication and I've never been more proud and stoked for you!!” Daniel reportedly put in about 13 days of effort to complete the full line.
The original Ice Knife was first done from a stand start by Dave Graham a little more than two years ago. He graded it V15 but, as with many high-end problems in Colorado, the grade of the stand version was later suggested as V14 by Daniel and Jimmy Webb who both repeated the problem this year. Regardless, the sit start certainly adds a notch of difficulty which puts the full line at V15 or possibly V16, though when Daniel sent the original version he commented on his 8a scorecard, “After some reconsideration, this line falls under the 8B+ grade. The sit will be 8C!”
