Chris Schulte climbed his first two (8b+)V14 boulder problems, Gecko Assis and Kheops Assis, this past month in Fontainebleau. Both were fifth ascents, after Ty Landman got the fourth ascents just days before. Chris has become one of very few Americans to climb this grade in one of the most historically difficult bouldering areas in the world.
Over the past several seasons, Chris has spent a combined six months in Font. Last year, he achieved one of his lifetime goals when he did the stand up to Kheops, given (8b) V13. This year he upped the ante considerably. In addition to Kheops Assis and Gecko Assis, Chris completed eight other problems 8a and harder including Sideways Daze 8b, Gecko 8a+/8b, La Merveille 8a+, T-Rex Assis (two versions - Direct and Adroite, both) 8a+, Ubik 8a+, Synapsis 8a, Imothep 8a and Amok 8a).
Originally a mixed climber from Durango, Chris has been bouldering almost exclusively in the past several years. He tends to be an adventurous and independent boulderer and has spent much of time searching out and cleaning new lines. He has established many problems in areas like Bishop, Durango, Joe's and Hueco, with the hardest being three (8b)V13's in Colorado. Child Stars, in Mount Evans, has only seen one repeat at the hands of Paul Robinson. His other V13's are Free Range, in Boulder Canyon and Get Around To It, in Big Elk Meadows which remains unrepeated.
