2013 Vail World Cup Bouldering Results

A World Cup Bouldering Competition was held this past weekend at the 2013 GoPro Mountain Games in Vail, Colorado.

With an ecstatic crowd behind her, Alex Puccio snagged the finishing hold and proceeded with a famous Puccio Pull-up. Just moments later, Akiyo Noguchi pumped the crowd up, hopped on the wall with only seconds remaining, and steadily made it to the top. This would eventually put Alex Puccio and Akiyo Noguchi into a tie that would be settled by attempts in semi-finals; Akiyo Noguchi won the tiebreaker and took second with Alex Puccio in third. Alex was the only American to podium this year at the only World Cup on US soil. As for the top spot on the podium, Austria’s Anna Stöhr would own this by a mere two attempts to the bonus holds. This is Anna’s sixth World Cup win this year.

In the men’s field this year, the Russians showed their absolute strength. Both Russians, Rustam Gelmanov and Dmitry Sharafutdinov, sent Men’s problem 4, which was rumored to be a V10/11. The Russians were the only two climbers to send more than one problem; each had three a piece. Dmitry, ranking number one in the world, edged out teammate Rustam for first place with fewer attempts. Not even Austria powerhouse Kilian Fischhuber and Canada’s own Sean McColl could top more than one problem in finals. The podium for Men turned out to be Dmitry in first, Rustam in second and Jorg Verhoeven (Netherlands) in third.

As for the other two Americans to make finals, Angie Payne and Paul Robinson, both ended up placing sixth after coming into finals in third and fifth respectively. It was an exciting and close competition that was streamed live on the IFSC website. The full replay can be viewed by clicking the image below. If you don't have time to watch the whole thing, a particularly exciting moment was Akiyo Noguchi's last second send of problem 4 which coincided with Rustam Gelmanov's powerful performance on problem 4. Check it out around the 2:04 mark.
