Mirko Caballero (10) from Los Gatos, CA had a pretty successful climbing season so far. Last fall, while still 9 years old, he took 2nd place at the Pan-American Youth Climbing Championships in Ibarra, Ecuador, in the Youth-D bouldering category, and then sent his first V10 (Beefcake in Bishop, CA) during Christmas break, while also on-sighting Frostbite, V8. In February 2011, he dispatched another V10 (Aquatic Hitchhiker in Bishop,CA) as well as Water Hazard, V9. The following week he won Gold at the ABS 12 Youth National Bouldering Championships in Boulder, CO.
With the Bouldering season coming to an end, Mirko decided for the first time to put on a harness, and try his luck at Sport Climbing. After 3 months of intensive training, he sent Whipping Boy 5.12b on his 2nd try in Jailhouse, CA in May 2011. Mirko then spent 4 days climbing in Red Rocks, NV where he on-sighted everything he attempted 5.12b and under, including Promises in the Dark, 5.12b, Fear and Loathing 5.12a, and The Calanques 5.12a. He also sent The Glitch 5.12c on his 2nd try, and The Gift 5.12d on his 4th try. On his last trip to Jailhouse, CA last week, he sent Fugitive 5.13a.
Mirko is now preparing for US Youth Nationals in Sport and Speed Climbing to be held July 7-10 in Atlanta, GA.From there he will fly to France for a 5 week climbing trip to Céüse, Annot, and Buoux, among others.
